52 films from 15 countries will compete at Envirofilm

At the turn of February and March the Selection Committee of the 19th International Environmental Film Festival ENVIROFILM 2013 held its meeting in the premises of the Slovak Environmental Agency.

Members of the Selection Committee: Kateřina Javorská – dramaturgist, screenwriter and pedagogue at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, Jana Mesiariková – dramaturgist, journalist and presenter at the Radio and Television of Slovakia in Banská Bystrica and Marek Janičík – director of documentaries.

During 4 days the Selection Committee members saw 186 films from 29 countries sent to Envirofilm 2013. Saudi Arabia and Columbia will have their premiere in Envirofilm this year.                               

Certainly, it was not easy to assess such a number of films and select the most interesting ones. Following countries will have the largest number of documentaries in the competition:  Czech Republic (13), Germany (9), France (8), Austria (6) and Slovakia (5).

Films are divided into categories. In category A - JOURNALISTIC PROGRAMMES AND FILMS - 9 films from 4 countries will be screened within the competition: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany and Belgium; in category B – DOCUMENTARIES  - 27 films from 12 countries: Germany, Austria, France, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Norway, Poland, Italy, Hungary, Switzerland, Spain and Iran.

In C category EDUCATIONAL AND INSTRUCTIVE VIDEO PROGRAMMES AND FILMS - 6 documentaries from 3 countries advanced to the competition: Czech Republic, Slovakia and France; in D category FREE PRODUCTION AND FILMS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH  - 5 films from 4 countries: Belgium, Russia, Great Britain and France and in the category of AMATEUR FILMS - 5 films will compete for one of the prices: 4 Slovak and 1 Russian. Selected 52 films will be evaluated during ENVIROFILM by the international jury on 3rd to 7th June in Banska Bystrica. For the public, competing films will be screened during the festival in all festival cities - Banská Bystrica, Zvolen, Banská Štiavnica, Kremnica, Košice, Poltár, Krupina and Skalica. On 7th June 2013 we shall know the winners of the festival and the winning films will be screened on 8th June 2013.

The Selection Committee has selected also films for the children's jury composed of Banská Bystrica primary school pupils. This year, the children’s jury will see 7 films from following countries: Czech Republic, Great Britain, Austria and France.

What can viewers look forward to during ENVIROFILM? Certainly the Italian documentary film the Dead of Alos, which brings not only interesting method of the subject capture, but also a cruel story that deserves attention. The Czech documentary All for the Good of the World and Nošovice shows, in a funny way, how a gigantic factory can intervene in the life of a small village.

Children will find enjoy the story of the little seal Gaston, who escaped from the Prague Zoo during the great flood.
